Stanford Earth graduates: Meet the planet’s challenges
At the diploma ceremony June 16, Dean Stephan Graham told Stanford Earth graduates that he is confident in their ability to deliver solutions. He encouraged the degree recipients to make a positive impact on the “complex, rapidly changing, disruptive world” using the unique skill sets and knowledge they developed at Stanford Earth.
Paula Welander, Emily Polk receive Excellence in Teaching Awards
Paula Welander, an assistant professor of Earth system science, and Emily Polk, a lecturer in Stanford’s Program in Writing and Rhetoric who serves as Stanford Earth’s writing specialist, received the school’s annual Excellence in Teaching Awards based on nominations from students, faculty, and alumni.
Minerals leader Brad Mills recognized with Distinguished Alumni Award
“Brad Mills is an internationally recognized leader in mineral resources discovery and development,” said Stephan Graham, Chester Naramore Dean of the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, in presenting the award. “He is widely respected for his scientific expertise and business acumen, as well as for raising the bar on environmental and social responsibility."
Xyoli Pérez-Campos receives 2019 Early- to Mid-Career Alumni Award
Pérez-Campos earned her PhD in geophysics in 2002 as an advisee of Greg Beroza, the Wayne Loel Professor in the Department of Geophysics. She holds positions as a professor at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), as well as head of the Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN), the National Seismological Service of Mexico, making her the “public face of earthquakes in Mexico,” according to Beroza.
