Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
About
Our mission is to promote a unified community of inclusion, respect, and excellence through the development of a student body, staff, and faculty that reflects the diversity of our national communities and international partners.

From the dean and director
Welcome to our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion website.
We hope you find resources of value here. It includes some of the many voices at Stanford Earth in our #StanfordEarthCelebrates identity series. You can source materials in our new DEI library to educate yourself on DEI areas such as inclusive teaching, land acknowledgments, and gender harassment, among other DEI topics. Finally, there are resource pages for faculty and staff, current students, prospective students, and postdocs. There are also avenues through which you can participate in events, monitor our progress, give feedback, report issues, and find support.
Vision
Stanford Earth aims to integrate diversity, equity & inclusion throughout the fabric of its educational mission. As we consider plans for a new school focused on climate and sustainability, we aim to build a community of students, postdocs, staff, and faculty that reflects the demographics of our society and values empathy and well-being along with academic and professional achievement.
With diversity, this community will reflect different worldviews and be attuned to the environmental justice and social issues that are fundamental to fruitful learning and lead to better scientific solutions for our planet.
By embedding DEI concepts and actions within all our programs and processes— from research, mentoring, and teaching to planning fieldwork and making curriculum choices—we hope to dissolve the social and cultural barriers that obstruct educational opportunity and equity for many, and in particular BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals, along with women, persons with disabilities, first-gen, low-income students, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and other underrepresented individuals in the sciences. We believe that paying attention to the experiences of those historically underrepresented in our community will help us build a more inclusive school for everyone.
From vision to practice
Building on the work created by our Respectful & Inclusive Workshop program (2006) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (2010) established by Professor Emeritus Jerry Harris to diversify the geosciences pipeline, our 2021-2024 DEI Vision, Goals and Action Plan was developed under the heightened awareness of racial injustices and the legacy of systemic structures of discrimination in society and within our academic community. Against this backdrop, we are determined to improve and expand Stanford Earth DEI practices and to create an inclusive school for all.

The plan is a roadmap outlining current and future efforts around diversity curricula and training, broad enhancements to the student, faculty and staff experience, improved engagement, expanded hiring outreach and student recruitment, and measures for progress. I hope you will take time to read the full report and peruse this website. Both are organized around four areas that inform our DEI efforts:
- Educate more members of our community about DEI issues and practices.
- Enhance support and resources to create an inclusive environment, particularly for historically underrepresented groups in the Earth sciences.
- Engage and partner with minority-serving institutions, organizations, and diverse networks to recruit and share educational and career opportunities.
- Expect accountability for DEI across research groups, departments/programs, and administrative units.
We can all play a role in making the future of this school more inclusive and ensuring that our vision is realized and sustained.

We believe in accountability
As we strive for a diverse, equitable and inclusive community, we are committed to transparent processes and measures to support hiring, admissions, and performance; as well as reports on school demographics and reporting structures for grievances. To view our Stanford's Earth's current demographics click on the Stanford IDEAL dashboard's pull down menu and select the school name. To monitor our progress on processes and activities see our milestones chart. To report a grievance, contact Lupe Carrillo at lupec@stanford.edu.
