We train today's scholars and tomorrow's leaders to contribute to a thriving planet, now and in the future.
E-IPER students combine academic disciplines including natural and Earth sciences, engineering, economics, humanities, social sciences, law, health, policy, and business to develop solutions to urgent global problems that affect human health, livelihoods, and sustainable resources.
E-IPER offers a PhD in Environment and Resources, and for students in Stanford's Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, a Joint MS in Environment and Resources in conjunction with their professional degree (MBA or JD). A Dual MS is offered to MA students in Stanford's Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy program, MD students in the Stanford School of Medicine, and PhD students in other Stanford departments and programs.
Welcome from our faculty director
Welcome to Stanford's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER, pronounced "eee" "eye" "per"). This unique program trains scholars and leaders to understand our natural and human environment and to develop novel paths to sustainability. E-IPER provides first-rate graduate training, a supportive intellectual community, and extensive opportunities for career development.
E-IPER students arrive to Stanford from all over the world, bringing rich life experiences and a diversity of academic backgrounds. Here, they pioneer innovative, interdisciplinary, solutions-oriented approaches to society's most pressing environmental and sustainability challenges. E-IPER students undertake their work immersed in a vibrant community of dedicated colleagues that draws from each of Stanford's seven schools. All in the E-IPER community—faculty, students, alumni, staff, and supporters—share a deep commitment to working collaboratively to solve complex problems.
E-IPER offers a PhD in Environment and Resources, as well as a Joint MS in Environment and Resources for M.B.A students at Stanford's Graduate School of Business or J.D. students at Stanford Law School. E-IPER also offers a Dual MS degree for Master's students in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy program, M.D. students at Stanford's School of Medicine, or students pursuing a Ph.D. in another Stanford school or department.
We accept PhD applications annually late in the Autumn. Students interested in a Joint MS degree may apply during the Winter quarter of their first year in their professional degree program or at the same time they apply to the GSB or School of Law.

This academic year the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) celebrates its 20th anniversary. With 120 graduate students enrolled this year, we've come a long way from the handful of students who pioneered the program two decades ago. Join us as we celebrate our program all year long. We remain committed to preparing leaders to create a more sustainable world.
Every person brings unique qualities, talents, and dignity to the E-IPER community and deserves to be accorded both common decency and institutional opportunity in a fair and respectful manner. We are committed to providing an environment that fosters wellbeing, meaningful work, and professional success.
