Join the conversation with Steven Chu, a Stanford professor, Nobel laureate, and former U.S. Secretary of Energy and Chris Field, Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment Director on Thursday, January 21 at 12:30 p.m.

Much of the time is reserved for interactions with the audience.

 Steven Chu is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular & Cellular Physiology in the Medical School at Stanford University.

Steven Chu was the 12th U.S. Secretary of Energy from January 2009 until the end of April 2013. As the first scientist to hold a Cabinet position and the longest serving Energy Secretary,he recruited outstanding scientists and engineers into the Department of Energy. He began several initiatives including ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy), the Energy Innovation Hubs, and was personally tasked by President Obama to assist BP in stopping the Deepwater Horizon oil leak.

He is the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997) and received numerous other awards. He has devoted his recent scientific career to the search for new solutions to our energy and climate challenges.

This event is one in a series of wide-ranging, informal conversations hosted by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Each conversation will explore the who, how, and why behind major developments in environmental science and policy.
