Finding Water in Data Poor Regions

Low success rates for water wells are common throughout the developing world, in large part due to the great uncertainty about local groundwater systems prior to drilling. I will discuss recent developments in two near-surface geophysical methods, transient electromagnetics and surface nuclear magnetic resonance, which show great promise for rapid cost-efficient groundwater characterization prior to drilling. Examples from refugee camps and host communities in Tanzania and South Africa will be given. pass code: 840912
