TITLE
"An Uncertainty Management Framework for Integrated Gas-Electric Energy Systems"

ABSTRACT
With increasing use of gas-fired power plants for electricity generation, the electric system depends heavily on reliable gas supplies. Gas-fired generators provide valuable flexibility to the electric grid and adjust their generation levels to mitigate renewable energy variability, which causes the variability to cascade into the gas system. In situations where the natural gas system is already stressed due to cold weather (e.g. polar vortex in the Northeast or Texas) or gas system failures (e.g. Aliso Canyon gas leak), this variability and uncertainty can threaten the security of natural gas pipelines and lead to gas supply disruptions.

In this talk, we will discuss our recent work on addressing this challenge through improved models for integrated system optimization. An important challenge is the vastly different temporal scales of natural gas and electric infrastructures; where electric systems reach steady state in seconds and require balance between consumed and produced electricity, natural gas systems typically operate in a transient dynamic, unbalanced state. We will discuss the importance of capturing the gas system dynamics when modeling the integrated gas-electric system, and present multiple scenarios for coordination and uncertainty management along with associated models for optimization and control.

Line Roald is an Assistant Professor and Grainger Institute Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in University of Wisconsin—Madison. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (2016) from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to joining UW Madison, she was a postdoctoral research fellow with the Center of Non-Linear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She received an NSF CAREER award in 2021, and the UW Madison ECE Outstanding Graduate Mentoring Award in 2020. Her research interests center around modeling and optimization of energy systems, with a particular focus on managing uncertainty and risk from extreme weather and renewable energy variability.
