"Enhancing and Transforming Transportation Research with Big Data"
A large part of past public policy failures to transform the transportation sector away from fossil energy and to reduce transportation emissions stems from the lack of comprehensive understanding of consumer behaviour. This talk lays out a research plan to address two of the biggest challenges in the future of sustainable transportation that have not been systematically addressed before: 1) explore, validate, benchmark and develop standards for the potential expressive analysis of the continuous and large amounts of information sensed in urban environments to boost the understanding of human mobility patterns on a global scale; 2) explore how increased access to data can be used to improve our ability to model and plan for changes in smart cities and (sub)urbanization, addressing the challenges of changing demands, attitudes, infrastructure needs and new transportation technology and services.
Dr. Sonia Yeh is Professor in Transport and Energy Systems in the Department of Space, Earth and Environment, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Her expertise is in energy economics and energy system modeling, alternative transportation fuels, sustainability standards, technological change, and consumer behavior and urban mobility. She served as Fulbright Distinguished Chair Professor in Alternative Energy Technology in 2016-2017 at Chalmers University and received Håkan Frisinger Award by Volvo Research and Educational Foundations in 2019. She is a contributing author to the Transport Chapter of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).
