"Hydrologic Continuity and the Depth of Infiltration"

The depth of the Earth’s upper crust that is regularly wetted by infiltrating precipitation delimits the habitable zone for soil and plant life and the reactive zone for biogeochemical processes on land. How deep is this hydrologically and biogeochemically activated depth across the land? And how it might have changed through time or may change in the future? This talk attempts to quantify the present-day global and seasonal structures of this depth and to explore external drivers and internal feedbacks, raising more questions than providing answers.

Biography
