Research Associate position in artificial intelligence for agricultural water, carbon, and productivity

The Agricultural Water Use Efficiency and Salinity Unit (US Salinity Laboratory) of the Agricultural Research Service in Riverside, CA is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher in hydrology.  This is a full-time,temporary appointment Not-to-exceed 2 years, in the Excepted Service.The initial appointment may be extendable up to four years in total, depending upon the availability of funding. The researcher is primarily tasked with executing research in support of a NIFA-funded grant ( to develop regional crop water use estimation and assess crop productivity using large scale satellite data and artificial intelligence. Model development and validation will be done with eddy covariance and other biometric data sets.  The researcher is responsible for helping plan and conduct personal research in conjunction with supervisor, interpreting results, preparing manuscripts, providing material for annual reports, and providing technical information and consultations on projects within ARS and with partners in universities and industry. This position will require a quantitative focus in regional hydrology, crop water use, environmental modeling, satellite remote sensing or related area is preferred.  Experience with script-based scientific programming, high-performance computing, or artificial intelligence/machine learning is preferred.  A strong record of scholarly/professional achievement commensurate with experience is required. Practical communication skills are preferred, with an emphasis on presenting and disseminating research information to a range of audiences. Qualification RequirementsA Ph.D. in physical or natural science, or engineering. Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard’s requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
