Simona Onori: Exemplary young educator
SAE International, a global association for engineering professionals, honored Onori for preparing the next generation of engineers to meet the real-world challenges of their industry.
Simona Onori, an assistant professor in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford Earth, has been honored with the 2018 Ralph R. Teetor Education Award from SAE International, a global organization for engineering professionals.
The award, established in 1963, recognizes and honors exemplary young educators who are successfully preparing the next generation of engineers to meet the real-world challenges of their industry. The award is named after former SAE president Ralph R. Teetor, who firmly believed that engineering educators are the most effective link between engineering students and their future careers.
“I have taught a number of courses over the past years in sustainable mobility, from advanced powertrain modeling and control to electrochemical energy storage systems, and intro class on energy storage and conversation devices,” said Onori, who taught at Clemson University from 2013 to 2017. “The idea behind creating these new classes is to help prepare students for successful careers in sustainable transportation and provide them with valuable skills – in modeling, simulation and control – to tackle the challenges that system engineers will have to face in this energy transition time.”
Onori’s research includes the investigation of questions related to the design, estimation, control and optimization of battery systems. She teaches courses in electrochemical energy storage systems, energy storage and conversion, as well as a one-unit weekend trip called Energizing California that brings undergraduates to tour geothermal, bioenergy and natural gas field sites in Northern California.
“Energy is the lifeblood of our modern society and involves disciplines like physics, engineering, economics, policy and math,” Onori said. “It requires working collaboratively and indeed it is challenging.”
SAE International is a global association committed to being the ultimate knowledge source for the engineering profession. It unites over 128,000 engineers and technical experts to drive knowledge and expertise across a broad spectrum of industries.
