The SPE 2019 Western Regional meeting was held on April 21-25, 2019 in San Jose, Ca. The meeting included two panel discussions on digital transformation and sustainability and regulatory issues, exhibits, networking opportunities and the traditional student paper contest among the Western Region universities. Five students from the Energy Resources Engineering Department received prizes at this year's event.

"Stanford Earth swept the student paper contest, taking first place in all three divisions, beating out all of the schools in the western region," said Roland Horne, a professor in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (Stanford Earth).

The student paper contest is a long-running tradition among the schools in the western region, according to energy resources engineering professor Tony Kovscek. For at least 50 years, rivals have been meeting and sharing their engineering science in this intense, but friendly competition. The prize winners gain the ability to write a paper about their research for a volume of proceedings, bringing science and prestige to their home department. The regional winners will compete in the international contest in September amongst first place winners from all regions of the world.

The Stanford University SPE Student Chapter was also awarded the Gold Standard designation for 2018. This prestigious designation recognizes the chapter’s programs in industry engagement, operations and planning, community involvement, professional development and innovation.
