Faculty & staff

Main content start

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office provides faculty and staff with different resources offered on campus and through our office to support the advancement of diversity.

We've compiled a list of programs, funding opportunities, and diversity research that can be used to support your students and also assist you in creating a more inclusive community at the school.

We invite all staff and faculty members in the School to reflect on how your work relates to others by asking yourself “Who are my practices/activities working for?” instead of asking, “Are my practices/activities working/efficient?” This simple question represents an active exercise to look at our own unconscious biases.

Graduate admissions

  • DEI grant proposals assistance
Our office can provide letters of support and information about diversity initiatives for grant proposals.
  • DEI graduate applications assistance
Our office can help evaluate applications from underrepresented candidates and also interview these prospective students during school visits.
  • Facilitates and distributes Dean’s Graduate Scholars Award and the EDGE-STEM nomination process.
  • Works with Associate Chairs for Diversity and Inclusion (ACDIs) and other faculty/staff in improving best practices for graduate admissions and faculty hiring.

Faculty support the work of creating welcoming spaces for students and peers that help individuals thrive in academic settings.

Diverse speakers

It is clear that limited representation results in limited viewpoints and perspectives.

It is also a way in which students from multiple backgrounds and identities, not only related to race/ethnicity, can find role models and feel welcome. This effort needs to rely on meaningful forms of engagement based on trust and clear communication, otherwise, it becomes only a form of tokenization. Finally, rethink who is considered an expert, this can increase the pool of potential speakers for a class or a seminar.

  • CAISE Platform. A search database to find historically marginalized collaborators.
  • Diverse speakers in STEM, Georgia Tech University. A collection of databases and groups.
  • Geoscientists of Color. A list of individuals from historically marginalized backgrounds working in geosciences.
  • Speaker List, Diversify STEM Conferences. A list of URM researchers across every field of STEM and Medicine.
  • 500 Queer Scientists. An organization providing a website with resources and a directory of non-binary gender scientists.
  • 500 Women in STEMM. An organization providing a global search platform to discover women and gender diverse folks in STEMM.

Increasing the representation of diverse voices as guest speakers is fundamental to ensure that voices that historically have been silenced in academia, are recognized and heard.

DEI training and best practices

New trainings and materials on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion are being created through different initiatives at Stanford University with the intention of fostering a more welcoming culture where everyone can thrive.
